The granddaughter of former US President Donald Trump, 17-year-old Kay Trump, made her political debut at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday night, hinting at following in his footsteps. Kay Trump, one of the ten grandchildren of the Republican candidate, spoke in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, revealing a hidden side of Trump who recently survived an assassination attempt and boasting about her golf skills.
Kay Trump was introduced to the Republicans at their national convention by her father, Donald Trump Jr., and said, "I want to share with you a side of my grandfather that people don't usually see... He sneaks us candy and soda," and recounted how Trump copied multiple copies of her school grades and added, "He did it to show his friends how proud he was of me."
The Telegraph commented on Kay's appearance, saying that her speech is part of a concerted effort to highlight the more human and sensitive side of Trump's life after the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania on Saturday. Like her grandfather, Kay is an avid golfer and an active user of social media. She has a YouTube page dedicated to her passion for the sport that she inherited from her grandfather and posted a photo with Trump after winning the women's championship at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida earlier this year.
In her speech, Kay said, "My grandfather calls me in the middle of the school day to ask me about my golf game... but then I remind him that I'm at school and I have to call him back later," and proudly boasted about her golf skills, adding, "He's always surprised that I don't let him influence me... as you know, I have to remind him that I'm also a Trump."
17-year-old Kay Trump hinted that she might follow in her grandfather's footsteps in politics when she said, "He always encourages me to push myself to be the most successful person I can be... It's clear that he sets a very high bar, but who knows, maybe I'll catch up to him someday."
She echoed her father and grandfather, saying, "The media makes my grandfather seem like a different person, but I know him for who he really is. He is a kind and loving person who truly wants the best for this country."
Regarding the assassination attempt on Trump, Kay described how "shocked" she was when she learned about it and said, "It was sad that someone would do that to another person... Many have caused my grandfather a lot of suffering, but he remains strong."
